In 2020, the trial judge ruled that the printed article, which alleged that Depp had abused Heard, was substantially true. In 2018, Depp sued in England the publishers of British tabloid The Sun for libel, accusing Heard of abuse. Afterwards, she became an ' ACLU artist ambassador on women's rights', with a Washington Post op-ed recounting her allegations against Depp later being revealed as having been primarily ghostwritten by staffers at the American Civil Liberties Union. Their divorce drew media attention when Heard alleged that Depp had been abusive throughout their relationship. Heard was married to actor Johnny Depp from 2015 to 2017.
